Application download to InView via RIO passthru

This process can be used to download a message file from the 2706-PSW1 software to an InView display connected to an InView RIO (Remote I/O) comms adapter (part numbers 2706-PRIOP, 2706-PRIOM and 2706-PRIOK) and also the InView's RIO Communication configuration to the InView's RIO adapter.

This note specifically shows the steps for downloading a message file to an InView display via the RIO comms adapter.

NOTE:
RIO Pass-through downloads will work with the PLC-5, SLC5/03-04-05 and ControlLogix processors. This example is for the RIO adapter connected to a PLC-5/40. To adapt to other processors, change the configuration in step 5 of the following procedure.

NOTE:
You must have the InView off-line software version 2.2 or newer and the communications module's firmware must be at Series A/Rev B or newer in order for the download of messages to work. Downloading of the communications module's configuration file (.IVC file) is possible with versions 1.3, 2.0 and 2.1 of the InView software.

Assumptions:

  1. The RIO comms adapter has been configured properly and is currently an active rack in the PLC's RIO scan list configuration.
NOTE: This tech note does not show how to set up the PLC-5's RIO channel. It is assumed the user is familiar with that procedure.
  2. The Passthru enable check box was properly configured when setting up the RIO comms configuration. The box should be checked to enable message downloads.
NOTE: Passthru is enabled by default.
    • This is only important if downloading a message file. If downloading a comms configuration, it does not matter if the box is checked or unchecked.
    • The selection becomes active after the download of the comms configuration file and the module reset is completed.
NOTE: The module will automatically reset itself after any download to the unit (either a comms configuration or message download to the InView).
  3. The RIO adapter's serial to InView cable is properly connected between the comms adapter and the InView being used.
See publication #2706-IN015A-EN-P for details on the connections and cables.

Steps on how to perform the Pass-Through download of messages to the InView via the RIO adapter:
  1. Set up the communications options for the message file to select the Industrial Network Comms option.
Edit this dialogue under the "Edit Display" selection for the message file.

  2. Choose to download the message file to the PC.

  3. Click on Yes to download.

  4. Select the "Remote I/O Pass-Through" option in the Transfer Type set-up box and select the PLC-5 that the RIO adapter is connected to.
In this example, it is a PLC-5/40 at ControlNet address #18 via a 1784-PCIC driver.

NOTE: You will never see the RIO comms adapter in a browse in RSLinx. You cannot browse to the RIO channel of a processor.

  5. Configure the parameters to match the RIO adapter that is connected to the InView that yoou want to download to.

  6. Click on the OK button and then read and click on Continue on the DANGER dialogue ONLY after reading and understanding the implications.

  7. Download of the messages to the InView should now proceed.
